The 19 year old driver, Brennan Eden, of Mason, Ohio, had been arrested by police for drugs offences after officers found him in his car in a car park with an unopened can of alcohol, a trace of marijuana and drug paraphernalia at around 6.13am.
He was released half an hour later and then another thirty minutes later was filmed racing by a police car at over 100 mph on the central reservation after losing control.
The Firebird then hit the barrier, catapulting the car over twenty feet in the air before hitting one of the uprights for the bridge and the carriageway itself before breaking up into three pieces.
The driver, although flung from car as it broke up, landed on a grass verge and was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Police have said that he was “very lucky to be alive”.
The crash happened on Interstate 675 in Greene County, Ohio, at 7:15 on Tuesday the 24th of August.
